What you need to take into account when buying a house

09 augustus 2019

So you are looking to buy a house in the Netherlands? Congratulations! Still there is a lot to consider before you want to take this big step. Are you ready for it? Read below to find out.

Eligibility

The first step is checking if you are eligible to buy a house. If you have been working and living in the Netherlands for six months or longer you may be so! If you are unsure about this, please contact your local real estate agent and your mortgage advisor. They can help you out.

From renting to buying

If you are currently renting a house or an apartment, quite a lot will change when you are going to buy a house. One of the most important things to take note of is your expenses, which will change significantly. Did you know…

  • You will need home owner insurance?
  • You will have to pay property tax?
  • Water boards charge different rates for home owners?
  • You will have to cover maintenance costs for your home?

Some of these might be evident, while some may not.

Wishlist

So, what are you looking for exactly? It is a good thing to know beforehand what you are looking for in a house. Here are some pointers:

  • Existing property or new development?
  • A house that’s ready to move in, one requiring light renovations or one requiring a complete overhaul?
  • An apartment, a terraced house, a semi-detached house or a detached house?
  • How many rooms?
  • Where do you want to live – in the city, the suburbs, or the countryside?
  • Do you want a garden? How about a garden, or a study?
